Plus, since summer is here, you don’t want to greet your guests with dirty cushions and pillows. That will ruin the mood and gathering. Today, we’ll teach you the step-by-step guide on how to clean outdoor cushions and pillows to keep your outdoor seating area fresh and cozy.

How to Clean Patio Cushions and Pillows
There are some outdoor cushions and pillows with removable covers that you can simply remove and toss in the washing machine. That’s one of the easiest ways on how to clean outdoor cushions, but if you can’t remove the covers, then use a dish detergent and garden hose. Make sure to do this on a solid outdoor surface since we want to avoid creating new stains on the cushions and pillows.
What You Need
- Borax
- Bucket of water
- Clean towel
- Dish detergent
- Garden hose
- Soft-bristled brush
- Vacuum with an upholstery attachment

Step-by-Step on How to Clean Patio Cushions and Pillows
Step 1: Vacuum Up Loose Dirt
Using a vacuum with an upholstery attachment, clean the surface of the cushion to remove any loose dust, debris, or dirt. Make sure to vacuum the seams and crevices. Be careful when cleaning around decorative elements like buttons since you might accidentally vacuum them. After vacuuming the surface, use a soft-bristled brush to gently brush away the grime.
Step 2: Scrub With Cleaning Solution
The next step on how to clean cushions and pillows is to use 1 tbsp. of dish detergent with ¼ cup Borax in a bucket of water, then scrub the entire surface, especially the parts with stains. Wait for five minutes to allow the solution to soak.
Step 3: Rinse Cushions With Garden Hose
Place your cushions and pillows in a patio or deck, then using a garden hose, rinse off the solution in the cushions and pillows. Never use a pressure washer as it can cause damage to the fabric.
Step 4: Let Dry Completely
The last step is to let the cushions and pillows dry completely. Squeeze out any excess water then blot the fabric with a clean towel. This will soak up moisture from the cushions and pillows. Place them in a sunny spot and leave them until they are completely dry.
We recommend cleaning your outdoor cushions and pillows at least twice a year, during the spring when you take them out and during the fall season when you store them away.
