No need to call an electrician. Learn how to install a ceiling light with these step-by-step instructions.
Simply changing a light bulb has always really scared me, but once I finally replaced our home’s ceiling light, I realized that it’s really not that scary and intimidating. It was actually easy and simple. So, if there’s a light fixture you want to change in your house, then you’re in the right place because we’ll break down how to install a ceiling light step-by-step. But first, you need to prepare these tools and materials.
- 4-in-1 screwdriver
- Needle-nose pliers
- Wire stripper/cutter
- Electrical box
- Electrical tape
- Light texture
- Wire nuts
Step 1: Turn Off Power
The first task to install a ceiling light is to turn off power at the main source to avoid accidents. Then remove the cover and bulbs of the old light. Make sure to turn off the light’s wall switch too.
Step 2: Unscrew the Three Wires: Black, White, and Brass/Copper
You should see three sets of wires: black, white, and brass/copper. Simply unscrew the three wires. If you’re planning to install a ceiling light, you’re connecting three wires from the fixture to three wires installed in the ceiling, then mounting the fixture hardware.
The DIY Playbook advised you to take a photo of the connections with your phone, so you’ll have a reference on how everything was connected.
Step 3: Prepare Your New Light and Install a New Bracket
If your new light fixture comes with a new bracket, you should use it. In this example by The DIY Playbook, it’s a single bar “strap” with a “nipple” screw. However, you might receive a circular, more universal mounting bracket. Screw it into the electrical box, but make sure that the wires are still accessible. Also, refer to your light fixture instructions for more direction.
Step 4: Connect Wires
Pay attention to the wires on your light fixture. If you have the same wires: black, white, and brass/copper, then your gameplan is to connect white to white, black to orange, and then take the brass/copper and connect it to a green grounding screw on the base plate. Wrap the brass/copper a couple of times around the green grounding screw.
Once you’ve connected and twisted the wires together, cap them off with a wire nut. Refer to your light fixture instructions for more guidance.
Step 5: Attach the New Ceiling Light
Secure your new light fixture to the ceiling and install the bulbs. It’s best to use LED bulbs for better efficiency and reduced bills.
Step 6: Turn on Power and Test the Ceiling Light
Before attaching the cover of your new ceiling light, it’s better to check first if everything is working properly by turning on the power. It’s quite a hassle to attach the cover then remove it again just because the light isn’t working properly.
If your new ceiling light isn’t working properly, you should check either the white or black wires because they might not be completely connected.
Step 7: Cover Your Ceiling Light
To complete the process on how to properly install a ceiling light, attach the cover of your new light, turn on the light switch, and you’re done!
It’s super easy to install a ceiling light. At first, it might look like an intimidating task, but it’s pretty simple and quick to do. You don’t have to call an electrician at all. Simply follow the instructions, and you’re ready to change any light bulb in your home. Learn more interior design tips and ideas on Omysa’s blog. You can do it!
