When you walk into this home, you are overcome by displays of quirky vintage portraits that add personality and uniqueness to Kevin’s home. It’s one of those spaces with a mix of subtle patterns, textures, earthy and bold colors, and comfy elements of different eras. Kevin has a gift for seeing the beauty in old furniture and home decor, and his ability to design his small living space and make the most out of it resulted in one overall chic and inviting modern vintage home.

Vintage portraits, decor, and furniture are displayed everywhere: a wall of vintage portraits, victorian bedroom mirror, retro-modern armrest chair, iron bed, rattan bedroom bench, gold sink faucets, antique dining table set, and the vintage TV sideboard furniture, just to name a few. Kevin paired these decorative accents with chic and modern pieces of furniture to create a one-of-a-kind modern vintage space.

While his home’s layout is small, the earthy and bold palette, lack of clutter, and careful space planning result in a feeling of spaciousness and calm. Kevin’s modern vintage home is such a great reminder that the way we design and care for our home reflects how much we appreciate and give importance to each little item, whether it’s new or old. Kevin runs his own interior design website called Dexter & Plaid, where you can shop his home’s vintage decor. Plus, he also writes on his blog about his home’s updates and shares chic furniture pieces. You can also check out his Instagram page.

Let’s check out more of Kevin’s modern vintage home.

Tell us something about your home

Leesburg is a historic town that I’ve always loved. It has a small-town feel with an urban flare. My home is right outside of the historic district and was perfect size since it’s just me!

TIP: It’s recommended to use big pieces of furniture even if you have a small space. Plus, keep your home clean and organized so that it won’t look cramped.

Describe your interior style

My style is what I like to call “casual-collected.” I love mixing styles, eras, patterns, textures, etc. I think it gives you this really great cozy vibe while also displaying various items that reflect who lives there.

TIP: It takes time to create the look of a collected home. You won’t be able to design a charming and unique modern vintage home, like Kevin’s, by buying all of your items in a single store or all at once. Also, carefully design your home by creating a mood board, just like what Kevin did for his master bath.

What is your favorite part of your home and why?

Being that I am in a smaller home, I would have to say the layout of my home. I know everyone loves open concept everything, but I enjoy a mix of open concept and sectioned off spaces. For example, my living room and dining room are in the same space, but my kitchen is off the dining room, so it’s not directly in the space but doesn’t feel completely out of the picture either.

What is your least favorite part of your home and why?

The lack of storage! I’m not sure if they thought if someone was living in a small home, they wouldn’t be bringing a lot of “stuff,” but they were wrong.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Oh wow, there’s so many! I get a lot of ideas from Instagram. There are so many talented designers there, but if I had to choose a few — Amber InteriorsHouse Seven DesignLight & Dwell, and Studio McGee.

Dream home design advice/tips you want to share?

Before you purchase anything, make sure you’re buying it because it expresses a part of YOUR aesthetic and not what you’re being told SHOULD be your aesthetic.

What are your recommended places to shop?

Thrift stores, McGee & Co., HomeGoods, and good ol’ Target.

Give new life to old, tired pieces, just like Kevin’s modern vintage home. Repurposing and using vintage pieces with chic modern furniture can give your home a real depth and personality. Plus, every space in your home will have a unique charm.
