From working as a pastry chef to becoming an interior décor enthusiast (not to mention, mom of four beautiful pumpkins), Joelle continues to express her creativity at their 1,800 sqm modern farmhouse home in the big city of Montreal!

Welcome to Omysa Home Tours, where we feature stylish and creative homes around the world.

Name: Joelle Frechette
Location: Montreal, Canada
Type of home: House, own
Size: 1,800 square feet
Bedrooms: 4
Bathrooms: 2

If you need proof that a relaxing and stylish home can also be kid-friendly, look no further than Joelle Frechette’s bright and welcoming modern farmhouse home. We couldn’t stop staring at her kids’ playroom! Joelle and her husband bought their house two years ago, and they are currently renovating it one room at a time, considering that there are two bathrooms, four bedrooms, a dining room, an old and falling apart kitchen, a living room, and a playroom.

There is a lot of reno to do to transform the entire space, but Joelle and her husband are taking their time to design and think through everything. Plus, the couple make a pretty good team because every room feels 100% kid-friendly and stylish! All the renovations definitely turned their house into a home.

I want to create spaces where my family and friends can feel good!” Frechette tells Omysa. Every décor Joelle selected was not just gorgeous, but it was also meant to be comfortable and functional for her family’s needs. It’s also about balancing the materials and style to make it feel calm, cozy, soothing, and warm.

Joelle continues to share their home reno and help people do the same in their homes through her blog and Instagram. She adds, “I’m not here to influence, but I’m here to inspire!” Make yourself a cup of coffee, and take a tour of Joelle’s modern farmhouse home.

Tell us something about your home

We live in the suburbs. A wonderful family neighborhood, about 30 minutes from the big city (Montreal). We chose to live here because my parents live across the street, and what’s better than having grandparents so close when you are a parent! We love it here because it’s quieter but close to everything we need.

Also, we wanted to live near our kids’ school and church. However, someday, we would love to move further and have a big land, a farmhouse porch, and maybe some chickens. Who knows!

Describe your interior style

My interior style is Modern Farmhouse. I’m a huge Joanna Gaines fan! I love mixing old and new! We love wood, metal, and shiplap! I always start to design a room like a canvas. I start with something white, add some wood, maybe a light fixture, shiplap, or molding for some character. Then I add the accents, accessories, and colors!

What is your favorite part of your home and why?

My favorite part of our home is our living room because this is where we spend most of our time as a family. From dance parties to storytime before bed. I also love that I went with patterned tiles on the fireplace. It’s so unusual, but I love it!

Tip: Create a playroom that will mature well while your kids grow up. It should also be a place the whole family can enjoy. Invest in built-in cabinets and shelves to keep things organized and tidy.

What is your least favorite part of your home and why?

Our kitchen. It’s old and falling apart. I have so many ideas for this room, but we need to be patient for now, and be grateful for our home as it is.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Pinterest, Studio McGee, Joanna Gaines, and Instagram.

Dream home design advice/tips you want to share?

Always take your time to design, think through everything! Furthermore, forget what people say. If you love it, go for it!

Tip: Don’t be afraid! Every home reno has a moment of “oh, no,” but trust the process, you will be pleased with the result!

Designing the perfect modern farmhouse home isn’t about spending a lot of money, but it’s a mix of old and new. Plus, it’s reflecting the personalities of each family member. We hope you enjoy this modern farmhouse home tour as much as we do!
