Kimberly and her family’s serene and spacious Chicago modern minimalist home is a dream come true. The place is decorated mainly in black and whites, which gives the space a classy and minimalist feel.

Kimberly started her career in architecture, but she left her firm to raise a family. They moved to Brazil for her husband’s job, where they lived in a very small high rise apartment with a kitchen the size of a closet for five years. After moving back to the States, Kimberly has restarted her career in interior design. You can find her on Instagram and she runs her own interior design website called¬†LemonLeaf Home, where she helps people turn their house into a home with style, personality, and affordability. She also shares styling tips, updating and up-cycling, DIYs, and tips and tricks for living and traveling well.

So, it’s no surprise that Kimberly’s own home has been thoughtfully designed and styled to meet all of their needs while maintaining the house’s beautiful architectural finishes. Filled with natural light, neutrals, gorgeous greenery, and finding a balance between clean lines and homey decor with a lot of character, Kimberly made the entire space a warm and comfortable place to live in.

Let’s check out more of Kimberly’s modern minimalist home.

Tell us something about your home

We lived in Brazil for five years in a very small high rise apartment with a kitchen the size of a closet! When we moved back to the States, we had two days to find a place to live, and our realtor had 50 houses lined up for us to see in one day.

Our current home was one of the last ones we saw. It was a spec home that was nearly complete, spacious, and would be ready to move into when we were. My husband fell in love with the master bathroom, and I fell in love with the large kitchen and the architectural finishes. We love our home, and I have loved furnishing it to make it our own.

Tip: Design the modern minimalist home of your dream by creating a clean, open, and light-filled space. Make the most of natural light in your place. If your home isn’t lucky to have an abundance of natural light, paint your walls and ceiling with warm white color to create the effect of a bright space.

Describe your interior style

My design style is a minimal, modern mix. I love texture, neutrals, clean lines, and minimal patterns.

What is your favorite part of your home and why?

I love our kitchen! I mentioned that we previously lived in an apartment with a very small kitchen. Our kitchen in this home is open, has lots of storage, and is large enough to entertain in and cook with our entire family! I also love the marble countertops and large island.

Tip: Your kitchen is the area of your home where everyone gathers. Whether it’s for sharing snacks and stories or for prepping meals. It’s ideal to have a kitchen island that can provide a buffer between the cook and the crowd while offering ample storage space. Consider the size of your island, its use if you’re planning to cook or prep your meals on it, and the seating if you’re going to use it as a dining area.

What is your least favorite part of your home and why?

Some of the rooms didn’t match the character of the rest of the house. I added trim, molding, and feature walls to give every room the style it deserved!

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I love to look at Instagram for inspiration! I can find beautiful designs in big accounts or small accounts.

Dream home design advice/tips you want to share?

If you feel like your home doesn’t have character, add it! Trim, molding, and fixtures can all be added or changed. I also believe that every space needs a pop of black to ground it and a plant, real or faux, to bring it to life!

A modern minimalist home can be cozy and full of life as long as you add your own character and style in every room. Always wanted a black bedroom? Try it out. If it fails, you can always change it. Also, you don’t need to spend too much money on designer decors but try to do DIY things to make the space feel more personal and homey. Plus, if you have the budget, it’s best to work together with an architect or interior designer. They will guide you on the best layout for your house.
